| Post Operative Instructions for Total Hip Replacement |
|
Walk with use of walker or crutches. Pump the ankle of the operative leg frequently and begin gentle leg raising exercises. You may shower – no bath – gently dry the incision and cover with gauze and tapeAvoid sitting in low chairs and sofas – dinette type chairs recommended for the first three (3) months Sleep with a pillow between legs for six (6) weeks Take pain medication as needed – try to avoid constipation with natural bran, milk of magnesia, or prune juice. Take Coumadin (blood thinning medicine) precisely as directed for four (4) weeks after surgery. This is an extremely important medicine to help prevent blood clots from forming in the legs or lungs. Taking more or less medicine than directed can cause serious complications. A blood test will be drawn one (1) time each week to check the appropriate medicine dose.Commode extension for three (3) months. Coumadin should be stopped four (4) weeks after surgery. After this date, take two (2) buffered aspirin twice a day for two (2) more months. Wear the Ted Stockings for four (4) weeks after surgery. These are worn to help prevent blood clots in the vein of the legs. If you develop any fever (102 degrees or above), severe pain, redness, or swelling in your operative leg, please call our office at (850) 897-8081 or contact your local emergency room. Return appointment in two (2) weeks after surgery unless told otherwise

| Post Operative Instructions for Total Shoulder Replacement |

Use cryo-cuff for cold therapy after surgery to the affected shoulder, 3 times daily for 30 minutes at a time.Your sling may be removed to allow elbow and early shoulder motion, per therapists’ instructions.Keep post operative bandages clean and dry. You may remove the bandage after 48 hours. At this point, you may shower over the incision site. Gently pat dry and apply gauze dressing each day over staples.Do not use ointment on your incision sites. Keep them clean and dry.Some discoloration and swelling in the upper arm and chest area are normal and no need for alarm.Notify our office, at (850) 897-8081 or contact your local emergency room, immediately of any abnormal redness or drainage, if you cannot relieve your pain with pain medications or if you have a fever of 102 or aboveYou will have a post-op appointment two (2) weeks after your surgery.

Use cryo-cuff for cold therapy for 72 hours after surgery to the affected arm.Keep your arm in a sling until your 2 week follow up visit with your doctor. You may remove the sling several times per day to move your elbow and wrist. Do not try to move your arm away from your body before your follow up visit!Keep post operative bandage clean and dry. You may remove the bandage after 48 hours. At this point, you may shower over the incision site. Gently pat dry and apply clean, dry dressing.Do not use any ointment on your incision sites. | Post Operative Instructions for Arthroscopy of the Knee |

Leave Ace Bandage on the knee for 48 hours following the arthroscopic procedure. Although the dressing may become moist or blood stained, this is not usually a cause for alarm.Apply ice to the knee directly over the Ace Bandage. Use ice for at least 20 minutes three times per day during the first 48 hours.After 48 hours, you may remove the Ace Bandage and the white absorbent pads beneath. Cover the stitches with Band-Aids for showering. Bathing or soaking should be delayed until after your first appointment.You are encouraged to use crutches for the first several days following the arthroscopy. The use of crutches or a cane after this period is optional. Swelling and stiffness in the knee after arthroscopy is normal and to be expected for the first few weeks following the procedure.You should have a return appointment in two weeks after surgery.If you develop any fever (102 or above), severe pain, redness, or swelling of your lower legs, please contact our office at (850) 897-8081 or contact your local emergency room.

Increase the flexion 5-10 degrees as tolerated each day until your bending reaches 90 degreesWhen not walking or using the CPM machine, work on knee straightening by placing a pillow or rolled towel under the heel and nothing under the knee. Do this several hours each day.Take pain medication as needed – try to avoid constipation with natural bran, milk of magnesia, or prune juice.Take Coumadin (blood thinning medicine) precisely as directed for four (4) weeks after surgery.
